Pinellas County Wage Theft Ordinance Now in Effect

Pinellas County Wage Theft Ordinance Now in Effect

January 4, 2016

The wage theft ordinance passed by the Pinellas County Commission back in November became effective January 1, 2016.  The ordinance is modeled after the City of St. Petersburg’s wage theft law.  Citizens will now have the ability to file wage claims against Pinellas area employers through a County administrative process.  The new ordinance gives citizens the opportunity to recover small wage debts that likely would otherwise go unredressed due to the cost of pursuing such claims in a state or federal court.  Claims must be filed within one (1) year of the date the wages were due to be paid. Employers should be aware that prevailing claimants may recover triple the amount of unpaid wages.
